Consisting of transparent solar cells, the product can be applied to the panes of standard window glass and provide power for light fixtures as well as other home and office devices.

Installing these power windows is much quicker and easier than traditional solar-power systems, allowing for installation costs to drop significantly. The existing window structure stays put, and only the glass is coated with the lightweight, translucent film.

Scientists at MIT are researching the best way to create the thin film that covers the entire surface area of a window to generate electricity, while keeping your view totally clear. Similarly, two companies in Toledo, Ohio, Xunlight 26 Solar LLC and DyeTec Solar Inc., are working on a coating for solar power-producing windows.

The technology is not yet available, but Xunlight 26 hopes to partner with window manufacturers to coat their products with the material in the near future.
